Amchitka is not a city, but rather a small island in the Rat Islands group of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska, United States. It is located approximately 1,300 miles southwest of Anchorage. The island is mainly known for its role in nuclear testing during the Cold War era, specifically the underground testing of nuclear weapons by the United States Atomic Energy Commission. Today, it is uninhabited and serves as a wildlife refuge.
