It is situated approximately 30 kilometers east of Derby and 312 kilometers northeast of Broome. The airbase is named after John Curtin, who was the Prime Minister of Australia during World War II. RAAF Curtin primarily serves as a forward operating base and supports air operations, including training exercises, maritime patrol, and search and rescue missions. It is also used for space tracking and surveillance purposes, as it hosts the Harold E. Holt Naval Communication Station, operated by the Australian Department of Defence.
