Cheap flights to New London

  • New London Airport refers to the proposed airport project to be built in London, England. The proposal aims to expand London's aviation capacity and alleviate congestion at existing airports, such as Heathrow and Gatwick.
  • The project, officially known as the Thames Estuary Airport, was initially suggested by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, in 2008. He proposed constructing a new four-runway airport on the Isle of Grain in the Thames Estuary. The airport, dubbed "Boris Island," would have been situated on an artificial island in the middle of the river.
  • However, the idea faced significant opposition from various stakeholders, including environmentalists, local communities, and existing airport operators. Concerns were raised regarding the impact on the estuary's ecosystem, the displacement of wildlife, and increased noise pollution.
  • As a result, the proposal for a new London airport in the Thames Estuary was ultimately rejected by the Airports Commission, an independent body established by the UK government to assess airport capacity needs. In 2015, they recommended expanding Heathrow Airport instead.
  • Currently, there are no concrete plans for the construction of a new airport in London. The focus has shifted to expanding existing airports, particularly Heathrow, to meet the growing demand for air travel in the region.
