Cheap flights to Fallowfield Railway

  • The Fallowfield Railway Airport is an obsolete railway facility located in Manchester, England. It was situated in the Fallowfield area, specifically between Wilmslow Road and Yew Tree Road.
  • The railway airport was constructed in 1892 by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (later renamed as the Great Central Railway). It served as a departure point for railway-based aircraft that transported passengers and goods between Manchester and other destinations.
  • The Fallowfield Railway Airport featured a large hangar capable of accommodating multiple aircraft. This hangar housed the aircraft and also served as a passenger waiting area. The facility had a runway adjacent to the railway tracks, allowing the aircraft to take off and land directly from the railway line.
  • However, the railway airport had limitations that hindered continued operations. The aircraft used at the time required long runways for take-off, which the facility couldn't provide due to space constraints. Additionally, the aircraft's engines were not powerful enough, resulting in limited passenger capacity and range.
  • The Fallowfield Railway Airport ceased operations in 1909 after a series of accidents and lacking financial viability. The facility was repurposed as a Great Central Railway station for passenger services before ultimately being closed in 1964 as part of the Beeching cuts.
  • Today, there are no visible remnants of the Fallowfield Railway Airport. The area has been redeveloped for residential and commercial purposes, with only historical records and photographs available to showcase its existence.
