Piedmont Airlines (1948-1989)

  • Piedmont Airlines was a regional airline that operated in the United States from 1948 to 1989. It was originally established as Henson Aviation by Richard A. Henson in Hagerstown, Maryland. In its early years, the airline served as a fixed-base operator and flight school.
  • Piedmont Airlines began scheduled passenger operations in 1961 under a new name, "Hagerstown Commuter," flying between Hagerstown and Washington, D.C. The airline expanded its route network and fleet throughout the 1960s, providing essential air travel services to small cities in the eastern United States.
  • In 1967, the airline changed its name to Piedmont Airlines, reflecting its expanded presence beyond Hagerstown. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Piedmont Airlines continued to grow, expanding its route network and merging with other regional carriers.
  • In the 1980s, Piedmont Airlines became a major player in the airline industry. It operated hubs in Charlotte, Baltimore, and Dayton, connecting smaller regional cities to major metropolitan areas. The airline offered high-quality service and became known for its distinctive livery, featuring a red, white, and blue stripe running the entire length of the fuselage.
  • In 1987, Piedmont Airlines was acquired by USAir, which later became US Airways and ultimately merged with American Airlines. The merger led to the discontinuation of the Piedmont Airlines brand in 1989, as its operations were integrated with those of USAir. Today, the legacy of Piedmont Airlines lives on through its former employees, who proudly remember the airline's commitment to customer service and its important role in connecting communities in the eastern United States.
