Balkan Bulgarian Airlines

  • Balkan Bulgarian Airlines was the national carrier of Bulgaria, which operated from 1947 until its dissolution in 2002. It was established as a state-owned airline and was originally known as "Bulgarian State Airlines." The airline played a significant role in the transportation of passengers and cargo within Bulgaria and to international destinations.
  • Balkan Bulgarian Airlines operated both domestic and international flights, connecting Bulgaria with various destinations in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The airline had a fleet of aircraft that included various Soviet-made planes, such as Tupolev, Ilyushin, and Yakovlev models. Over the years, the airline expanded its operations and modernized its fleet with the introduction of newer aircraft.
  • However, the airline faced financial difficulties and was unable to compete with other international carriers. In 2002, Balkan Bulgarian Airlines ceased its operations due to its mounting debts and operational inefficiencies. The government decided to terminate the airline and focus on developing other options for air transportation in the country.
  • After the dissolution of Balkan Bulgarian Airlines, Bulgaria's national carrier became Bulgaria Air, which was established in 2002.
